Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about piano care and our services
Tuning Questions
Understanding piano tuning basics
Most pianos benefit from tuning every 6-12 months. Factors that may require more frequent tuning include heavy use, exposure to significant climate changes, and pianos that haven't been tuned in a long time. We recommend seasonal check-ins to maintain optimal stability in Wisconsin's variable climate.
Pitch raising is needed when a piano has fallen significantly below standard pitch (A440). Over time, string tension decreases, pulling the entire instrument down. Restoring proper pitch requires multiple tunings over several visits to avoid stressing the frame and soundboard. This process ensures your piano sounds its best and prevents long-term damage.
A standard tuning typically takes 1-2 hours. If pitch raising is needed, allow additional time. Complex pianos or those requiring repairs may take longer. We'll provide a time estimate when you schedule your appointment.
Repair Questions
Understanding piano repairs and maintenance
Common causes include dried lubricant in the action mechanism, worn bushings, foreign objects in the action, or humidity changes affecting wood components. A professional assessment can identify the specific cause and determine the appropriate repair.
Action regulation is the adjustment of all mechanical components to ensure even touch and response across all keys. Signs that regulation is needed include uneven key height, inconsistent touch weight, or notes that don't speak properly. We recommend a regulation check every 3-5 years for regular players.
Yes, we have experience with water damage repair. The extent of repair depends on how long the water exposure lasted and what components were affected. Some cases require soundboard replacement, action rebuild, or cabinet repairs. We provide honest assessments of what's possible and practical.
Refinishing Questions
Cabinet restoration and finish care
Most scratches and finish damage can be repaired or significantly improved. Minor scratches often blend with proper touch-up techniques. Deeper damage may require more extensive work including color matching and blending. We assess each case individually and provide options for different budgets.
Full refinishing typically takes 4-8 weeks depending on the scope of work and our current schedule. This includes preparation, stripping, sanding, applying multiple finish coats, and final polishing. We'll provide a specific timeline when we assess your piano.
Yes, color changes are possible for most pianos. We can match custom colors or apply traditional finishes like walnut or mahogany. Keep in mind that darker colors require more preparation and may affect value for antique instruments. We'll discuss all options during consultation.
